Headlines: Portland Hearts of Pine Set to Make League Debut

Gabe Hoffman-Johnson stood next to a sunny soccer field and smiled. The professional men’s soccer team he’d founded was on the field, having a fun, energetic training session. Two days later the team would play its inaugural game in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Lewiston High. Hoffman-Johnson’s passion project to bring professional men’s soccer to Maine had come to fruition.

Headlines: CBS Sports Picks Up U.S. Open Cup Media Rights
U.S. Soccer and CBS Sports have reached a multi-year, multimedia rights agreement that will make CBS Sports the English-language home of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup through 2026, it was announced on Wednesday. CBS Sports will provide live-match coverage of the Open Cup across its linear and digital platforms, with every match streaming live on Paramount+. CBS Sports’ coverage will include every match from the third round of the tournament, beginning April 15, onward to the final, with select matches simulcasting on CBS Sports Network and CBS Sports Golazo Network.

Woo hoo indeed.Those words blared from the speakers after Nathan Messer’s blistering free kick into the top-right corner of the goal put a capper on the Portland Hearts of Pine’s 4-0 U.S. Open Cup victory over amateur side CD Faialense of Cambridge, Mass. on Thursday in Lewiston. It fit Messer’s goal, which drew woos of appreciation from the estimated crowd of 3,200. Even more, Blur’s celebratory anthem fit the festive feel of the first professional soccer game played in Maine by the state’s newest pro franchise.

Headlines: Hearts of Pine Ready for Debut
After a 60-day preseason and six successful scrimmage games (4-0-2), the Hearts of Pine will play in front of a live audience for the first time on Thursday, taking on CD Faialense at Lewiston High in a first-round game in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament. The match begins at 6:30 p.m. Close to 3,000 tickets had been sold by early Wednesday, which should make Don Roux Field a lively and crowded facility.

After the first 11 matches, five USL League One, four USL Championship, one MLS NEXT Pro, and one UPSL side have secured passage to the Second Round. Seven of the teams to advance did so as the visiting side. Three teams making their US Open Cup debut punched their ticket to the Second Round.
