Why I'm Rooting for Incredibolt

The Ringer

[Ike] Green thought the Montana ranch was the perfect place for him to break [Mick] Ruis’s new yearlings, rather than an ostentatious training center in Ocala. He believed that the cold climate and the mountain bent grass would make their horses stronger, healthier, and more resilient. And he believed that letting their yearlings run free in pastures on a real ranch in the Montana foothills would give the horses a psychological edge: They’d be happier and better behaved.

David Hill's profile of 2018 Kentucky Derby starter Bolt d'Oro and his connections is reminiscent of how our co-owner and trainer Michael Graffam raises and trains his young pacers and trotters at historic Norton Farm in Falmouth, Maine.

Bolt d'Oro now stands as a stallion at Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky, and the 3-year-old Incredibolt is his first progeny to draw into the Kentucky Derby. He also sold as a yearling for $75,000 which will likely be our maximum budget for when our partnership buys a Thoroughbred yearling.

Quote, Unquote: Hunter S. Thompson

"[W]e didn't give a hoot in hell what was happening on the track. We had come there to watch the real beasts perform."

- Hunter S. Thompson in his story "The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved."
