Headlines: The Soaring Costs of Youth Sports
To understand how this nationwide crisis is impacting New Jersey families, NJ.com asked readers to share their youth sports experiences in an online survey. The passionate responses provided a road map for a six-month investigation that is the most comprehensive analysis to date of the dire, often predatory atmosphere permeating the youth sports landscape in the state. In interviews with nearly 100 parents, coaches, athletes and experts, the reporting found a system that has corrupted the experience, making it so that even the families of average athletes feel compelled to shell out as much as $20,000 a year just for their child to keep pace with their peers.
