Chapter 10: How Soccer Explains the American Culture Wars
In the final chapter of his book, Foer writes about the increased popularity of youth soccer in the U.S. starting in the 1970s, and delves into how that rise in popularity dovetailed with the culture wars during the same period.
Observing that demographics of soccer supporters have been inverted compared to the rest of the world (middle class yuppies vs. working class), Foer points out soccer is just one of numerous touchstones that help explain the Blue vs. Red sensibilities in American politics.

Chapter 1: The Blind Man and the Hustler
McClelland lives in Chicago throughout this book, and he describes his home track Hawthorne Race Course and a couple of its most notable characters in this opening chapter.
One character is Lewis, a blind panhandler who'd been posted outside the track's main entrance for decades. And the second character was a recovering addict named Glenn, who always seems to be looking for the next angle to score another $2 for the next wager.

Last month, Maine Gov. Janet Mills presented [Ron] Turcotte with a state proclamation in honor of his career and ties to Maine. In places like Van Buren and Grand Falls, the border is thin. Communities are intertwined in ways those who divide us for petty reasons and division's sake can't comprehend. Maine mourns the loss of Turcotte along with New Brunswick.
