Chapter 13: Maine's Maritime Trades in the Period of Ascendancy
Drs. Lawrence C. Allin and Wayne M. O'Leary open up by writing about Maine's deep-sea fisheries, or the state's fisheries beyond thirty miles from shore that had limited ownership in communities like Bath, Portland, and Waldoboro.
Closer to shore, hundreds of smaller operators focusing on fisheries such as salted-cod fish. According to Allin and O'Leary, Maine seafood's markets were primarily the immigrant working classes of northeastern cities and slave populations in the south and West Indies. And the industry's "bounty law" greatly benefited small-vessel owners and "safeguarded the fishing industry from the worst effects of nineteenth-century monopoly capitalism."
And finally, Allin and O'Leary close the chapter by analyzing the Maine's shipbuilding industry, a marriage between the forest and the sea.

Alireza, 17, is a phenomenon in Afghanistan, playing futsal, a faster indoor variant of soccer played with five on each side. Word had spread that he was participating in a local tournament on a recent afternoon, and fans, their smartphones raised, rushed to snap a selfie with him as he exited the locker room. The teenager became a national hero last fall after scoring the winning goal against Afghanistan’s archrival, Iran, giving the country its first title at the Asian Youth Games, held in Bahrain. Headlines: Amish Community Harvests Ice
Around December, our Amish neighbors start monitoring the pond, cutting a small hole in the ice to gauge its thickness. When it reaches about a foot, the time is right to call a work bee, when Amish families come together to tackle a big project. The ice harvest, like other things that need doing in the community, is organized by the Work Bee Coordinator. “Individuals tell him about projects that need to be accomplished, and he looks at the different needs and prioritizes them,” one community member told me. "Then he announces a work bee at a certain location, and as much as we can, we all gather and help each other with the work."
