How Soccer Explains the World: An Unlikely Theory of Globalization (Franklin Foer)

Chapter 7: How Soccer Explains the New Oligarchs

Foer uses Italian clubs Juventus and A.C. Milan as foils for a shift in the political guard in Italy in the 1990s and 2000s.

Known as the "Old Lady," Juventus is owned by the Agnellis who represented what Foer calls the "preglobalization style of ruling class" in Italy. Patrician, discreet, and quietly manipulative, the old guard of political power was marked by political bribery, protectionism, and cronyism.

In contrast, A.C. Milan was owned by Silvio Berlosconi, whose style of influence and corruption was more brash, populist, and aggressive.
