90 Days: Monday, November 18 (Day No. 43)

(This is the time of year when the horse racing season for the Ivory Pine Syndicate is winding down, but the soccer season for the Rosevelt Soccer Club is gearing up. Here's a 90-day glimpse of the day in the life of a horse racing managing partner and soccer club administrator.)

Awoke, 5:33a

Worked at Westbrook High School, 7:30a-2:30p

Rosevelt Soccer Club admin, 3p-4:30p

The focus over the last week or so has been on the logistics of our annual kick-off event, and now the focus is on tying up loose ends: Preparing our oldest boys' and girls' teams for their upcoming college showcase event in Massachusetts, finalizing our last few roster spots available, preparing our online apparel store for new orders, and completing and sharing our teams' winter training schedules.

Ivory Pine Syndicate admin, 5:30p-5:45p

Send out a reminder to partners about Crimson Pine's race at Plainridge Park tomorrow afternoon.

He *finally* has an inside post position that will hopefully give him a better chance to contend in the early pace, and we're racing for a little more purse money ($15,000) than previously despite staying at the same class of competition.

Met with a local Fall Classic soccer club, 6:30p-9p

Besides building our own club, we've always tried to maintain ongoing conversations with other Maine clubs, whether they're Fall Classic clubs or fellow Maine State Premier League clubs.

Most of us clubs share the same challenges and similar aspirations, but don't have frequent opportunities to have freewheeling conversations about common best practices we can share. Our club's ethos can be summed up by what our club's former representative on the Soccer Maine Board of Directors Rob Rodriguez used to say: Our clubs should compete on the field, but collaborate off the field.

Unfortunately, not all clubs share that perspective and instead see their own program's progress (or lack of progress) as a zero-sum proposition.

Maine soccer will only achieve its greatest potential, though, if we have better connectivity and cooperation among the various stakeholders and silos that make up our ecosystem. And conversations like the one we had tonight are one of the steps forward for achieving that goal.

Asleep, 10p
