90 Days: Monday, November 4 (Day No. 30)

(This is the time of year when the horse racing season for the Ivory Pine Syndicate is winding down, but the soccer season for the Rosevelt Soccer Club is gearing up. Here's a 90-day glimpse of the day in the life of a horse racing managing partner and soccer club administrator.)

Awoke, 5:05a

Ate breakfast, 5:15a-5:30a

This is the week when in-season mode kicks in. Our club's annual meeting and kick-off event in on November 16, our two oldest teams need to be prepped for their college showcase events in a few weeks, and the to-do list for our club's official start of the new season in January gets longer before it gets shorter.

So it's important to adopt in-season habits and routines, including regular peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for breakfast. This 2017 story about the popularity of PB&J sandwiches in the NBA has always stuck with me, and a PB&J sandwich on a croissant and a French roast coffee checks all the boxes for breakfasts and snacks this time of year.

Worked at Westbrook High School, 7:30a-2:30p

Helped prepare for mock election at Westbrook High School, 2:45p-4p

Our department is known for developing civics-related experiences for our school's students. Over the years, we've organized and hosted a Maine Supreme Judicial Court session, and naturalization ceremony, and a few mock elections.

This year we're replicating a full-scale mock election similar to the one we organized in November 2016. Students are required to complete a (mock) voter registration form; each of us teachers have paused our regular curricula for a 2-day curriculum about all aspects of the races, candidates, and issues they'll be voting on; we've replicated the look of a regular polling station; students will be filling out (mock) ballots that are replicas of the ballots distributed to Westbrook voters; and students are running every aspect of the polling station.

They're directing traffic, registering unregistered voters,  checking in voters, distributing ballots,  supervising the submission of ballots, distributing "I Voted!" stickers, and tallying voting results.

Rosevelt SC admin, 4:15p-6:15p

My classroom occasionally doubles as a home office, and it made more sense to just stay at school to work on club admin instead of driving home and losing potential momentum and motivation. The time change means sunset is now around 4:30p, and the early darkness can put a damper on productivity.

The recent addition of the 2024 U.S. Open Cup poster series is also a helpful motivator when doing the administrative drudgery that's required to keep a club going strong.

Asleep, 9:36p
