90 Days: Tuesday, November 5 (Day No. 31)

(This is the time of year when the horse racing season for the Ivory Pine Syndicate is winding down, but the soccer season for the Rosevelt Soccer Club is gearing up. Here's a 90-day glimpse of the day in the life of a horse racing managing partner and soccer club administrator.)

Awoke, 4:38a

Voted, 6a-7a

The polling stations in our town don't open until 7a, but I arrived at our polling station about an hour before it opened.

My grandparents had worked as poll workers for as long as I could remember, and this is the first election my grandmother was working since my grandfather passed away in June. She was also a little uneasy, because her pre-election training featured a handout that outlined how they'd handle certain emergency or disruptive situations.

According to her, this is the first time they'd talked about these types of situations, and it's a shame that the baseless attacks on our electoral system over the last four years have made our volunteer poll workers apprehensive about fulfilling their vital civic duty to help make our democratic republic remain as functional, fair, and as representative as possible.

Besides diligently giving shoutouts to our club's players for their accomplishments on the field while they play for their high school programs, we're also pretty good about highlighting our players' commitments to college programs when those commitments are made public.

This morning's announcement was particularly poignant, because it featured a player I've been coaching on and off over the last decade. When our older daughter was too young to play with our town's Fall Classic club as a 7-year-old in 2015, we went through a waiver process to give her a 1-year exemption to play for the town club that represented the town from which we'd just moved.

Looking back, it was a serendipitous circumstance because I met a coach who I'd not only continue working with for the next decade, but who's also been one of our club's directors over the years. And our two daughters have been playing together with our club since 2017, when we fielded our first youth girls' teams.

I'm also really proud that a player who's played with us since she was a 10U player has been able to commit to a college program that hasn't been ranked any lower than #14 in national Division II polls all season, and it's yet another example of how our club punches above its weight when it comes to developing players who continue to compete at the collegiate level.

Worked at Westbrook High School, 7:30a-2:30p

The highlight of today was the mock election our department organized for our school's students.

We replicated every aspect of the real-life voting process our students will need to complete when they're old enough, and student volunteers chipped in with every aspect of the election process throughout the day.

Our department's goal is to provide a school-wide, civics-related experience every year, and we knocked our thorough mock election experience out of the park.

Ugh.
