(This is the time of year when the horse racing season for the Ivory Pine Syndicate is winding down, but the soccer season for the Rosevelt Soccer Club is gearing up. Here's a 90-day glimpse of the day in the life of a horse racing managing partner and soccer club administrator.)
Awoke, 4:55a
Checked election results, 5:15a-5:30a
My politics are mostly left-of-center, and my ballots usually reflect those preferences. Most of the candidates I vote for are members of the Democratic Party, but there's usually at least one Republican candidate on my ballot every election. And that was the case again this election cycle.
I try to be fair to each candidate, and try not to fill out a straight party ballot. But I've never understood the appeal of the Republican who's represented that party in each of the last three presidential elections, and strongly believe most of his policies and character traits are diametrically opposed to the national interest, the public good, and all the characteristics of a good and decent person.
The 2016 election was obviously a shocking result, and it took me at least a month to feel normal again. For better or worse, these most recent results were surprising but the shock hasn't lasted nearly as long. It feels like folks who supported the Republican ticket this year live on a different planet, and they seem to think the same thing about those of us who voted for the Democratic candidate.
Our country appears to have given the election winner a mandate, and it appears only natural consequences *may* break the bizarre fever we're experiencing in the United States.
So our focus will be on getting more active and involved in our local community, our state, and our region, because we live in a blue town, a blue state, and a blue region that generally reflects our values and priorities more than the national scene will for at least the next two years.
Watched Borgen, 5p-6:30p
The plan is to cut my social media browsing to only posts that involve the club and our partnership, and to limit my media consumption to anything except national current events and national politics.
Borgen: Power and Glory is the most recent season of the Danish show about a fictional stateswoman, and it's a way to scratch any political junkie's itch.
Listened to Cocaine and Rhinestones, 6:45p-7:45p
After unfollowing all the podcasts I usually follow for national politics and current events, I found this show about some of the history and characters of country music in the 20th century. So far, so good.
Rosevelt SC admin, 6:45p-7p; 7:45p-8:15p
The plan is to do another heavy lift with admin tomorrow, but there were a few time-sensitive items on the to-do list related to our upcoming Board of Directors meeting and annual kick-off event.
Read The Poacher's Son, 9:15p-9:30p
It's been years since I started reading the Maine writer Roger Doiron's crime series about a Maine Game Warden, and now feels like a good time to reread the series.
