90 Days: Sunday, December 29 (Day No. 85)

(This is the time of year when the horse racing season for the Ivory Pine Syndicate is winding down, but the soccer season for the Rosevelt Soccer Club is gearing up. Here's a 90-day glimpse of the day in the life of a horse racing managing partner and soccer club administrator.)

Awoke, 7:46a

Played chess, 9a-9:15a

Added a game of Freestyle Chess (also known as Fischer Random Chess or Chess960) to my four ongoing classical games.

The primary difference in Freestyle Chess compared to classical chess is where the pieces are placed at the start of the game, and it's getting recent heat because of the recent announcement by chess champion Magnus Carlsen that he's teaming up with entrepreneurs to start a new chess competition using the Freestyle Chess format.

The benefit of this style of chess is the randomness of the starting pieces makes rote memorization of various opening lines more difficult, which means players generally need to rely more on quick thinking and creativity than memory to be successful--at least for now.

Handicapped and watched races, 2p-3:30p

After finishing each of the last couple years in the black, my personal wagering budget for 2024 ended in the red.

So I exhausted what was left in my Hollywood Races account yesterday, and plan to take a hiatus from handicapping and wagering horse races for about a month. It's good timing, because our partnership won't have any horses racing over the next month and the next big day on the horse racing calendar isn't until the Pegasus World Cup on January 25.

Asleep, 10:53p
