Maine: The Pine Tree State from Prehistory to the Present (Judd, Churchill, and Eastman)
Chapter 15: Defending Maine & the Nation
Dr. Joel W. Eastman opens the chapter with the timeline of the Aroostook War and the Webster-Ashburton Treaty that established the boundary between Maine and Canada.
Jerry Desmond, Stanley R. Howe, and Dr. Edward O. Shriver summarize the outsized influence Maine Republicans had both on the state and national stages in the mid-1800s.
And Jerry Desmond closes the chapter by focusing on Maine's contributions to the Union effort in the U.S. Civil War. Along with focusing on key generals--Adelbert Ames, Joshua L. Chamberlain, and Oliver O. Howard--and key regiments--of course the Twentieth Maine Regiment--Desmond's summary keeps in mind the 73,000 Mainers who served in the Union army and navy. (Desmond points out that that number represents "the highest figure in proportion to its population of any northern state.")
