Maine: The Pine Tree State from Prehistory to the Present (Judd, Churchill, and Eastman)
Chapter 21: Maine In Depression & War
Dr. Richard H. Condon first summarizes the state of Maine's transportation networks and economy on the eve of the Great Depression, and then he pivots to an analysis of Maine voters' skepticism of the Democratic Party and the New Deal during the 1930s.
New Deal programs did play a role in Maine's economy, but Condon makes that case that the state's relatively low union membership and the failure of the Passamaquoddy Tidal Project muted Mainers' enthusiasm for Roosevelt's New Deal agenda and led to Maine being one of only two states (Vermont is the other) to vote against FDR in all four presidential elections his name appeared on the ballot.
